Woman shoots at Orange County firefighters during well-being check

Orlando, Fla. — Firefighters were met with gunfire during the well-being check of an elderly Orlando woman, according to the Orange County Fire Department.

It happened 10 a.m. Thursday morning on Observatory Drive near Orlo Vista.

A woman called 911 because she was unable to contact her elderly mother for several days and the mother suffers from a “serious medical condition.”

Crews arrived to the home, which was locked, met the daughter and attempted to contact the person inside with no answer.

“We had credible information that somebody was in danger inside with a medical emergency,” says Division Chief Mike Widja.

Firefighters then made entry through a window and that’s when shots started firing in their direction.

One firefighter was trapped inside and held at gunpoint.

“At this point, she was concerned that someone had broken in and was going to rob her, and there was a history of that at that residence,” Widja said.

Law enforcement came in and deescalated the situation. The fire department said no one was injured and the elderly mother declined any medical treatment.

Widja tells WDBO that the woman was unable to hear the firefighters trying to contact her due to a medical condition.

The Sheriff’s Office is not pursuing any charges at this time.
