EXCLUSIVE: 14 cracks appear on a new bridge support in downtown Orlando

Orlando, FL. — There are about 14 visible cracks on a bridge pier that supports the new elevated bridge off Garland avenue in the downtown area. The bridge is completed but has yet to open as FDOT says, “Some cracking has been pointed out... We are investigating whether this is cosmetic or a structural matter.”

The L shaped bridge pier can be seen with horizontal cracks that are marked with multiple small circles and four drill holes. According to the construction expert contacted, the drill holes are used to keep the larger cracks from further expanding.

He goes on to say, if a cosmetic issue is concluded the team can fill in the cracks and the drill holes continuing with the schedule as planned. However, if it’s deemed structural then the project team must decide whether to bring down the grade of the bridge or tear it down and replace it.

Bringing down the grade of bridge could mean limiting the weight of cars and trucks that are allowed to take the ramp to ensure it is well maintained. Signs could be put up as a result with a list of restrictions.

Tearing down a bridge would be the less desirable option for a construction team, the expert says.

The I-4 Ultimate is estimated to cost more than $2.3 billion in year-of-expenditure dollars and scheduled to be completed by 2021. With many components, any setback can threaten their timeline.

The bridge is set to open June 15. Though FDOT was not open for an interview, they say the project is still on time and safety is their top priority.
