Orlando tops new study as worst place in nation for affordable housing

Orlando, Fla. — Anybody who lives in the City Beautiful will tell you it is not cheap to stay here, and a new study agrees with that notion.

According to a new analysis from the National Low Income Housing Coalition, the Orlando metro area is the worse place in the nation to find a place to live at the lowest income level, which it says is typically under $25,000.

The report says that just 13 available and affordable rental homes are there for every 100 families who need them, which is a massive drop from 17 last year, when Orlando was tied at second worst with Los Angeles.

Ironically, a list compiled by Livability.com ranks Orlando at number 17 on the Top 100 Best Place to Live. So you can imagine how disconnecting this information can be.

However, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer has already announced that 10 projects are underway so more affordable housing can be made, and this year, Governor Ron DeSantis has proposed using Sadowski funds solely to address this issue. Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings also is addressing the issue of affordable housing with the launch of a Housing for All task force to create both short and long term solutions for this apparent crisis.
