stands by new writer with old tweets attacking white people

The New York Times released a statement standing by its hiring of tech writer Sarah Jeong whose past tweets about white people are being called into question.

Several publications such as the National Review were quick to publish pictures of Jeong's old tweets from a few years ago where she talks about "white people" and "white men."

In some tweets, Jeong’s account describes white people as “groveling goblins,” “bullshit,” “miserable,” and “dogs.”

Jeong was hired Wednesday as the Times's lead editorial writer on technology.  She attended Harvard Law School and has previously written for the Washington Post, Atlantic, and New York Times Magazine.

The Times released a statement portraying Jeon's past tweets as responses to online harassment.  Part of the statement reads, "For a period of time she responded to that harassment by imitating the rhetoric of her harasses.  She sees now that this approach only served to feed the vitriol that we too often see on social media.  She regrets it, and The Times does not condone it."

This comes months after the Times fired new hire Quinn Norton over racist and anti-gay language in her old tweets.
