HGTV apologizes after suggesting American flag as 'festive' tablecloth

The Flag Code, which formalizes and unifies the traditional ways in which we give respect to the flag, also contains specific instructions on how the flag is not to be used.

They are:

  • The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal.
  • The flag should not be used as a drapery, or for covering a speakers desk, draping a platform, or for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.
  • The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard.
  • The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations.
  • The flag should never have placed on it, or attached to it, any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind.
  • The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.

Cable TV channel HGTV is apologizing after suggesting that an American flag would make a 'bright and festive' table cloth.

"HGTV Fans, regarding the recent article that appeared on our website … This was a regrettable use of our flag and it never should have happened," the network said. "We sincerely apologize and have removed the post from our website. We want to assure our fans that HGTV is proud of the American flag and everything it symbolizes for our people."

Comments to HGTV's Facebook page were quick to criticize the network:

  • I am STUNNED. Did one of your shows really say that using the American Flag for a TABLE CLOTH was OKAY??? I'm just STUNNED.
  • What in the Hell name is wrong with you people at HGTV? FYI here is a little ETIQUETTE YOU of all people shoule be aware of !!! SHAME ON YOU!
  • Do not use an American Flag as a table cloth. Too many Americans have died protecting your freedoms!
  • Your use of an American flag as a tablecloth is totally thoughtless & disrespectful! Decorating with red white & blue is one thing but a FLAG! Please recognize your error & apologize to your viewers/readers.

  • Notice the name on the place setting? Barb? As in Barbarella? As in "Hanoi" Jane Fonda? They might as well have flown the ChiCom flag over this table, the effect would have been the same!11!11!!!!
