Former NASA astronaut attempts to break round-the-world speed record

Cape Canaveral, Fla. — A jet that took off from Kennedy Space Center Tuesday is hoping to break a record today.

Former NASA astronaut Terry Virts will attempt to fly around the world in less than 48 hours.

Virts and his crew wants to set a round-the-world speed record for any aircraft flying over the North and South Poles.

The time to beat: 52 hours and 32 minutes—a record set in 2008.

The 25,000 mile mission, called One More Orbit, pays tribute to the start of the historic Apollo 11 mission to the moon.
