Celebrate Apollo 11's 50th anniversary at these events

Hard to believe that 50 years ago on July 16th, the Apollo 11 mission would be the first time that humans landed on the Moon. The worldwide televised event was described by Commander Neil Armstrong as "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." In honor of the celebration, there are a number of events going on around Central Florida.

Here are some of the milestone events that will take place at the Kennedy Space Center.

July 15

Apollo/Saturn V Center Transformation Celebration- This event starts in the Apollo 8 Firing Room, and has representatives there to show you what is new inside the facility, and then you get to tour the transformed Apollo/Saturn V Center. The event runs from 10:30 to 11 a.m..

July 16

Apollo 11 Launch Flashback Event- You will spend time in the new Moon Tree Garden, a chance to check out vintage cars from the 1960’s, including Armstrong's actual Blue Corvette as well as a special re-airing of the original 1969 CBS footage, featuring special guests and speakers. The events runs from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Global Launch Event- Future astronauts in your family can visit the Junior Astronaut Activity Tent in the Rocket Garden where they can build and launch rockets of their own. That event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m..

July 19

NASA's Giant Leaps: Past and Future- NASA TV will broadcast live for its nationwide two hour program celebrating the 50th anniversary. The even runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, July 20th, there are also two big events going on in Orlando and Sanford.

From 10 am to 2pm, you can check out One Giant Leap: A 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Moon Landing at the Orange County Regional History Center. This free event will feature a variety of activities, including a chance to build an astronaut egg drop, marble moon painting, and moon crater mini golf. You can read more about this event here.

Later that evening from 7 to 9 p.m., Seminole State College will be hosting a Film Screening and Talk of Apollo 11 at the Emil Buehler Planetarium. The CNN documentary will be played, along with a discussion by former Director of the Office of the Chief Engineer Warren I. Wiley. It is located at 100 Weldon Boulevard in Sanford at the B117C Planetarium.
