Baker sued for not putting anti-gay message on Bible-shaped cake

A baker in Denver, Colorado is being sued after a customer says she refused to fulfill his request for anti-gay remarks to be placed on a Bible-shaped cake.

Marjorie, Silva, owner of Azucar Bakery, says the man came to her shop last year and ordered the cake, which she agreed to make. When she was finalizing the order, Silva says the man handed her a piece of paper with hateful words about gays and requested she write them on the cake. He also wanted the cake to have a picture of two men holding hands with an X placed on top of them.

Silva refused to print the anti-gay messages herself, but told the customer she would give him icing and a pastry bag to write the words himself. He didn't want that.

"It's just horrible. It doesn't matter if, you know, if you're Catholic, or Jewish, or Christian, if I'm gay or not gay or whatever," Silva tells the Associated Press, adding that she has made cakes regularly for all religious occasions. "We should all be loving each other. I mean there's no reason to discriminate."

The customer, identified by KUSA-TV as Bill Jack of Castle Rock, filed a discrimination complaint to Colorado's Civel Rights Division, which is now reviewing the matter. I a statement, Jack believes he was discriminated against because of his beliefs.

"As a result, I filed a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Division. Out of respect for the process, I will wait for the director to release his findings before making further comments."

Silva says she remains upset by the entire incident.

"I really think I should be the one putting the complaint against him, because he has a very discriminating message."

Silva isn't backing down, posting a picture to the bakery's Facebook page.
