Well this is awkward.
A New Jersey family took their 15-year-old miniature pinscher to be euthanized back in May, but they just found out Caesar has been living with a veterinary worker for the last five months.
The couple says the dog was suffering from a long-term illness and poor quality of life when they brought him to Briarwood Veterinary Hospital to be put down.
A police investigation reveals Dr. George Menez, who recently sold the veterinary practice, allowed the technician to take the dog home.
The dog was returned to his original owners, who spent some time with him before he was finally euthanized.
The investigation is ongoing and could lead to theft and animal cruelty charges.
