On-air surprise: Joe Buck learns he is joining father in Pro Football Hall of Fame

CLEVELAND — Joe Buck is rarely at a loss for words, but the longtime sportscaster was speechless Thursday night.

As Buck was working during halftime of the Cleveland Browns-Cincinnati Bengals NFL game, he learned he had become the latest recipient of the Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award, NFL.com reported.

“Oh, my God. I don’t even know what to say,” Buck said during the broadcast. “That’s unbelievable.”

The award cements a place for Buck in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Buck joins his father, Jack Buck, as the only father-son combination to receive the honor. The award is annually presented by the Pro Football Hall of Fame “in recognition of longtime exceptional contributions to radio and television in professional football,” according to a news release from the Hall of Fame.

Jack Buck, who died in 2002, won the award in 1996, Sports Illustrated reported.

David Baker, the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s president and CEO, appeared in a prerecorded video to break the news to Joe Buck. The video was narrated by Kansas City Chiefs fan Paul Rudd, a friend of the broadcaster, NFL.com reported.

“For 26 years, the entire lifetime of Fo Sports, Joe Buck has been a voice bringing the game to life for fans of NFL football,” Baker said in a news release. “Joe’s preparation for his games and his delivery in key moments of those games bring an added quality to the network’s production. Being named this year’s Rozelle Award winner is well-deserved recognition for over two decades of excellence in his craft. I know his dad would be proud.”

Joe Buck has called NFL games on Fox since 1994, when he was 25. He became the network’s lead broadcaster in 2002 and has been partnered exclusively with Hall of Famer Troy Aikman since 2005, according to NFL.com.

“We’re gonna get you a gold jacket,” Aikman told his broadcast partner.

Joe Buck has called six Super Bowls and 22 World Series and has won seven Emmy Awards.
