Not so chicken: Gang of poultry kill intruder fox

Brittany, France — Don’t call these hens chicken!

A story that seems to go against the laws of nature comes from north-western France and involves a whole lot of chickens and one unlucky fox.

The body of a juvenile fox was found pecked-to-death in a hen house in Brittany.

The creature had apparently entered the coop through an automatic hatch door, presumably looking for lunch, when he found himself faced with more hens than he could handle.

"A whole mass of hens can arrive together and the fox may have panicked in the face of such a big number,"  said Pascal Daniel, head of farming at the agricultural school Gros-Chêne.

The fox was thought to be around five or six months old was found with fatal beak-type-blows on its head and neck after it had become trapped inside.

The French farm is home to up to 6,000 free range chickens and that particular coop that the unfortunate fox found his way into held around 3,000.

"They can be quite tenacious when they are in a pack,” Daniels adds.
