Hurricane Maria kills 15 in Dominica; heads for Turks and Caicos

Miami, Fla. — The National Hurricane Center says Maria intensified again Thursday afternoon, as it heads towards Turks and Caicos as a category 3 storm with 120 mile per hour winds.

The storm has now killed at least 15 people on the island of Dominica, according to a Facebook post by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit. Skerrit also said his own home was demolished in the storm.

The extent of Hurricane Maria's impact on Puerto Rico is still not fully known because dozens of municipalities remained isolated and without communication Thursday.

What we do know is, the island could be without power for months and the storm has triggered landslides and floods.

Maria hit the island Wednesday as a Category 4 storm with 155 mph winds, the strongest hurricane to hit Puerto Rico in more than 80 years.
