Woman’s advice to give kids doorstops to protect them from school shooters goes viral

CONNECTICUT — Katie Cornelis says she gave a rubber doorstop to her two young nieces after the Sandy Hook shooting. They carry them in their backpacks to school --for safety.

"It truly pained me when I handed it to them, and I didn't want to scare them, but it was out of love and they understood," write Cornelis in a Facebook post.  "In light of the recent shooting, I wanted to share this with all parents."

Cornelis posted a photo of the doorstop she carries in her purse and advises other parents to give their kids one after the school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

“Sure it’s small, but it can be powerful in keeping you safe if you ever have to barricade yourself in a room. If a gunman shoots out the door lock it will still keep the door from opening and may just buy you some time.”

The Connecticut woman tells the Daily Mail that a security expert shared that tip with her and wanted to pass it on.

“I pray no one ever has to use it.”

Cornelis wrote the post one day after 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, killing 17. He’s charged with 17 counts of 1st degree murder.

Her post has been shared over 1.3 million times.
