VIDEO: Man trips on baggy pants during robbery

Polk County deputies arrested the man they say tripped and fell on his baggy pants when he attempted to steal beer from a convenience store.

On Wednesday, deputies arrested 27-year-old Juan Gutierrez, also known as the “clumsy beer thief,” for stealing two 18-packs of Bud Light from the E-Z Food Store in Lake Wales on April 27.

Surveillance video caught Gutierrez running from the store with the beer and then tripping on his baggy pants and falling, dropping the beer. He then jumped into a waiting black Chevy Malibu and fled the scene.

A patrol deputy spotted the getaway vehicle on August 16 and detectives located the owner. The owner identified Gutierrez and the driver, 22-year-old Angle Ortiz, as the two suspects involved in the theft. She told detectives she loaned her car to the two men so they could “go and get some beer.” When they returned without the beer, Ortiz told her the Gutierrez fell down and “lost” the beer.

Ortiz was booked into the Polk County Jail and charged with one count petit theft. He bonded out last week. Gutierrez admitted to deputies he stole the beer and was booked into the Polk County Jail on one count petit theft.

Both Ortiz and Gutierrez have been in the Polk County Jail on several prior occasions.
