Overweight Orlando dog hopes to lose big this summer

ORLANDO, FLORIDA — It’s the season of bikini’s, tank tops and short shorts and while most of us are having a hard time keeping the Snickers out of our mouths, there’s one Orlando dog that can totally relate to our struggle.

Meet Puff Pastry! With a 35 inch waist line and tipping the scales at more than 60 pounds, Puff is one curvy canine.

He was found as a stray in Orlando last month and taken back to Orange County Animal services where he was adopted as a puppy 7 years ago.

Calls to his family listed on his microchip were ignored. That's when Puff was saved by the Central Florida Animal League, who paired him up with his foster mom, Jo Farley. (It's not known exactly what breed of dog Puff is, but his rescuers think he may be a Chihuahua mix.)

"He should weigh about 30 pounds," Farley told  News 96.5 WDBO reporter Samantha Jordan. "So just imagine, doubling your weight and tell me what you think you'd look like."

The adorable pup is now going through a Biggest Loser-type boot camp in her Titusville home to get his summer bod back.

Since Puff can hardly walk 10 feet without getting tired, his exercise routine is limited right now, so he’s focusing more on changing his eating habits by munching on prescribed weight loss dog food. However, he does enjoy a swim in the pool on a hot summer day.

According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, more than 50% of dogs and cats in the U.S. are obese or overweight.

But Puff is doing something about it, having already lost an inch around his belly since last month! His progress is being tracked on his very own Facebook page called Puff's Transformation and with his doggie friends Chanel and Cosmo around to cheer him on, Puff could lose his recommended 30 pounds, and go from fluffy to fit in less than a year!

While Puff  still has a long way to go on his weight loss journey, during my visit with the adorable pooch, he hit a milestone--losing the swimming life vest—and doing the doggy paddle all on his own!

Go Puff go! We’re rooting for you, buddy!
