Orange County School start times may change again

Orlando, Fla — Parents be on the lookout for another survey asking for your opinion on a change to Orange County Public School start times.

The decision to seek parent input came at a work session Tuesday.

The board was presented with four options that would make school start times later to allow high school students to sleep in a bit more.

Options 1 and 2 are cost neutral.

All of the options have high school students starting at 8 a.m. or later but middle school students would not start until after 10 a.m. and dismissal would be close to 5 p.m.

One middle school teacher pointed out that testing any student after lunch is a challenge.

The board decided to seek parent input and continue the discussion, but promised a change is coming even if its a 20 or 30 minute shift back from the current 7:20 a.m. start time.

“That’s better than where we are right now, it is a step, it’s not a leap, it’s a small step. But its a small step in the right direction.” said Orange County School Board Member Pam Gould.
