Category 4 Dorian projected to move near east coast through Wednesday

According to the 8 p.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center, Dorian is about 105 miles east of West Palm Beach. It is moving westward at 1 mile per hour and is forecast to continue a slow path and turn northward near or just offshore of the coast.

A storm surge warning has been issued from Lantana to Altamaha Sound. A storm surge watch and hurricane watch has been issued from North of Deerfield Beach to the South of Lantana and from Ponte Vedra beach to South Santee River. Also, a hurricane warning has been issued from the Jupiter Inlet to Ponte Vedra Beach. On the current track, Dorian's core should move dangerously close to the Florida east coast late Tuesday through Wednesday night. NOAA and Air Force Hurricane Hunter planes indicate the maximum sustained winds are 140 miles per hour with higher gusts.

Dorian is a category 4 hurricane and is expected to remain powerful over the next few days. They say near the coast, storm surges are to be expected, along with large and destructive waves, which can reach up to 7 feet if the peak surge occurs at the time of high tide. It is also projected to produce up to 8 inches of rain from the Florida peninsula through Georgia. This rainfall may also cause life threatening flash floods. In addition, isolated tornadoes are possible through Tuesday along the immediate coast of East Central Florida.
