Dick’s Sporting Goods will no longer sell assault-style rifles

The nation’s largest sporting goods retailer announced Wednesday that it is pulling assault-style weapons from its shelves.

Dick’s Sporting Goods CEO Ed Stack says the shooting at Majory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida was the last straw and his stores will no longer sell assault-style rifles or high-capacity magazines. They’ve also raised the minimum age to buy a firearm to 21 years old.

“To think about the loss and the grief that those kids and those parents had - we said - we need to do something,” Stack tells ABC News.

We at DICK'S Sporting Goods are deeply disturbed and saddened by the tragic events in Parkland. Our thoughts and prayers...

In a statement released on Dick's Facebook page,  the company says Parkland shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz had bought a shotgun at Dick's in November 2017 legally, and although it was not the gun used in the Parkland massacre on Valentine's Day, it helped lead to their decision.

“Clearly this indicates on so many levels that the systems in place are not effective to protect our kids and our citizens,” reads the post.

Stack said he remains a Second Amendment supporter but he doesn't want the company to be part of a mass shooting.

The announcement has received mixed reactions on social media:
