Another pedestrian killed near UCF

The Florida Highway Patrol says a woman is dead after being hit by a car around 8:30 p.m. Monday while crossing Alafaya Trail at Colonial Drive.

The victim, who is not being identified yet, was hit on a busy stretch of road, near the campus of the University of Central Florida, which is known for accidents.

A popular student and fraternity president, 21-year-old Reuel Buchanan, was hit and killed in April 2018 while jogging on Alafaya Trail about a mile from campus.

A 13-year-old boy was involved in a hit and run crash in September while crossing Alafaya Trail at Science Drive on his bike while in a cross-walk.

The following month, 21-year-old Katie Nakonechny, was critically injured in another hit-and-run accident on Alafaya Trail at Strategy Boulevard.

Most recently, in January, two women were again struck by vehicles on Alafaya Trail in separate accidents about a week apart.

Dozens of others have been killed or hurt as well on Alafaya Trail over the past decade.

Orange County and UCF representatives have been trying to improve safety for years for those who walk near the campus.

In just the past few weeks, the Orange County Board of County Commissioners and the UCF Board of Trustees announced they are implementing even more safety measures, including installing fencing in medians, adding more lighting, and constructing a 10-foot-wide bike path.
