Port Canaveral commissioners approve multi year lease for new Space-X facility

Cape Canaveral, Fla. — Space-X is growing and that is great news for Florida's space coast.

Wednesday, commissioners with Port Canaveral approved a 5-year lease with the private space company for a facility in the city to refurbish its rockets.

The company has already started work on renovating the 53,000 square foot facility where it plans to process rockets for reuse in the future.

Space-X’s senior director for Launch Operations Ricky Lim said, “The facility is going to be a place where we process and store rocket stages and so a big part of the missing, the long-term vision for Space-X, is that we reuse our vehicles.”

The company has landed several first stage boosters from recent launches on a floating barge in the Atlantic ocean, those components have been refurbished at a facility in Texas. Now, the facility in Port Canaveral will allow the company to attain its goal of rapid-rocket reuse.
