US Air Force song and dance group costs tax payers $2 million

The group "Tops in Blue" began performing in 1953, making it one of the oldest and most widely traveled entertainment groups of its kind, according to the Air Force Times.

The group  has an annual Congressional appropriation of $319,000. It's 2015 budget includes more than $1 million in MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) funds, which are designed to provide service members with entertainment and leisure activities. The report notes that doesn't include the service mens salary's who are usually detailed from their real jobsfor long periods of time.

However, the Times reports that Tops in Blue is not particularly popular among service members, consistently ranking among the most common suggestions for saving money given by airmen. Critics suggest that the group’s funding would be better spent on “amenities that are more popular with airmen and their families, such as movie theaters, swimming pools, libraries, and hobby shops.”

The group does get paid for corporate gigs, last year they brought in $170,00 from Coca-Cola and Dell.

This year, the group has just one tentative agreement  for $30,000.
