A Sanford mother is in jail, accused of beating her child over bad grades.
Police say Yianette Cartagena hit her 8-year-old daughter with a belt at least 10 times because she was unhappy with her report card.
The arrest record shows the child received 'plain faces' instead of 'smiley faces' on her progress report, which led to the beating.
That belt also had metal rings and her daughter suffered bruising on her face, arms, legs and backside.
The mother apologized, but faces child abuse charges.
