OIA officials to move forward on new terminal plans

A new terminal at Orlando International Airport will move forward even though two airlines do not want it.

The  Greater Orlando Aviation Authority is expected to get a team of architects to design the terminal.

The board said they need the new terminal because airport traffic could reach 38 million passengers next year.

There are 36.4 million passengers coming in and out of OIA every year, and that is expected to grow next year, especially with international passengers.

Due to the additions of new airlines like Emirates, the terminal will have 16 gates and could open in 2019.

However, Southwest Airlines and Delta Airlines have opposed the project saying a new terminal would up their operating costs and that could cause them to have to raise fares.

Both have international hubs somewhere else.
