No charges after woman stabbed in road rage incident

A woman who claimed self-defense after a road rage incident and stabbing in a Palm Bay shopping plaza won't face criminal charges.

A 23-year-old woman seen swinging a knife in the video claimed self-defense.

Officials said the State Attorney's Office won't be pursing charges against the woman, who stabbed the other woman in the video. They said the woman is immune from prosecution under Florida's statute related to justifiable use of force.

"Based on the video and the witness statements it appeared it could be reasonable that this person was in fear for her safety, which is why she acted the way she did," Palm Bay Police Sgt. Michael Pusatere said.

Police said the incident started on Malabar Road. The woman, who would later wield the knife, was driving behind a motorcycle.

Later, in the shopping plaza, she was accused of tailgating by a woman riding on the back of the motorcycle.

Police said the woman carrying the knife tried to walk away on three different occasions, but the other woman went so far as to yell at her to come out of a store, before their final confrontation and a call to 911.

"My girlfriend was just slashed by a knife in her neck," the caller to 911 said.

"Slashed by a knife in her neck?" the dispatcher asked. "Where is the person that did that?"

"They're gone. But it's about a 3-inch wound. It's very deep," the caller said.

"It's always better to walk away if you can. Unfortunately there are some people in this day and age who aren't going to walk away. You try to avoid those as best you can to prevent something like this from happening," said Pusatere.
