Woman claims armed teen went to Leesburg HS to kill her son

Investigators are working to figure out why an Apopka teenager showed up at a high school he didn’t attend with a stolen gun and ammunition early Wednesday afternoon.

School officials said the gun wasn’t loaded but Keiandre Lovett, 16, who wasn’t a student at the school, had the ammunition in his pocket.

Lovett was reported missing from the Apopka area before he went to Leesburg High School with the weapon, authorities said.

The mother of a student who was the alleged target said the teen came from Apopka to kill her son.

She said her son found out that the teen was in the building with a gun, so he alerted administrators, and within minutes the intruder was under arrest.

Authorities have not said why the teen might have been targeting the unidentified student.

A message from the high school’s principal went out to parents soon after Lovett was found with the gun.

“I would have felt a little better if they had put the school on lockdown, but they didn’t,” said student Monique Bell.

Leesburg police said the matter was handled quickly. When a Leesburg officer approached Lovett, he admitted to having a a .38-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver tucked in his sweatshirt.

The deputy found the gun on the teen, as well as hollow-point bullets in his pockets. The revolver was determined to be stolen, authorities said.

The teen was taken into custody and was booked into the Lake County Jail for possession of a firearm on school grounds.

Students at Apopka High School recognized their classmate, who they said also ran track.

A neighbor said Lovett’s family was new to the area and friendly.

Authorities said Lovett is currently being investigated for other crimes.

School officials said there will be extra deputies on campus Thursday morning.
