Large tree falls on moving vehicles in DeLand

A falling oak tree struck two vehicles in DeLand Tuesday afternoon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The large tree crashed down on a Hyundai driven by 35-year-old Anitra Lark on Kepler Road around 10 a.m. Lark, of Miami, was taken to Florida Hospital DeLand with minor injuries.

"I was on the roof and heard a big loud crash and I looked over and I heard the car squeal and start spinning out over there," witness Mike Kirby said.

A Chevrolet SUV that was driving by as the tree fell sustained several large scratches from the limbs.

"It was a pretty good, massive size tree. (It) just landed on the car and totaled the car out," Kirby said.

Troopers said the tree appeared to be rotted and that a gust of wind probably brought it down. It's possible that someone could be held responsible for the incident depending on whose property the tree was on.
