HOA denies 6YO cancer patient's playhouse

Homeowner's Associations are often put in the difficult position of weighing what people want versus what is best for their respective community.

There is no shortage of stories where HOA's are vilified for trying to protect the interests of their community.  Most of those stories involve a veteran or someone wanting to show their patriotism being denied a request to put up an American flag but this story is even worse.

KCTV 5 reports a homeowner's association in a Kansas City suburb is coming under fire for denying the wishes of a 6-year-old girl with cancer.  Ella Schultz is battling cancer and now her family is battling their HOA.

Ella's No. 1 wish is to beat her cancer that has threatened her life and stop the chemotherapy. But her mother, Jennifer, had asked her what she would want beyond that.

"She said, 'A house,'" her mother recalled. "'I want a play one.'"

They worked with Make-A-Wish and the dream was granted. The construction giant, J.E. Dunn, even agreed to build it in their Raymore backyard and ensure the shingles matched those used on homes in the neighborhood.

Make-A-Wish says their request to build Ella's playhouse has been denied and HOA management does not appear willing to back down.

Since the story broke on Tuesday, support for the family has poured in.  KCTV 5 reports an Arizona man has even come forward and offered to pay any fines or penalties levied by the HOA.
