Health officials: Man with measles visited Kissimmee

A European man who attended a conference in Kissimmee has been diagnosed with measles, according to the Florida Department of Health.

The patient attended a conference at the Gaylord Palms Resort from March 16-17.

The Health Department won’t say where the man slept, but said he attended an IT conference at the resort.

Most of the man's time was spent in Osceola County, but the traveler also spent time in Orange and Miami-Dade counties during the infectious period of March 14-20.

The Florida Department of Health is working with its epidemiologist and the organizer of the conference to call anyone who may have come into contact with the man.

Officials have not said how many people that might be.

A representative of the resort said it followed all guidelines recommended to them by health officials so management is confident its property is in the clear.

“You would think they would post a sign to be on the lookout. I would think that would seem to make sense to do,” said hotel guest Chris Schultz.

Resort officials said there’s no more risk on the property because the incubation period from the man’s diagnosis is over.

The patient, whose name has not been released, did not visit any theme parks during his visit, and was hospitalized March 20-24 in Miami.

The patient left Florida March 25.

The measles can be serious or fatal, especially to children.

The Health Department wants to remind residents that vaccination is the best protection against the disease.

Officials want residents to watch out for symptoms until April 7 and recommend that they isolate themselves and seek medical care if they develop symptoms.

They’re making sure that others who were at the same hotel and restaurants as the man are being notified.
