Fraternity members accused of spitting on veterans in Florida

Two chapters of the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity from the University of Florida and Emory University in Georgia are under fire after being accused of berating and spitting on veterans during Spring break in Florida.

The

that the chapters held their spring formals at Panama City Beach's Laketown Wharf Resort last Friday, where the Warrior Beach Retreat for wounded Iraq and Afghanistan war vets was also taking place. Veterans say that students were thowing beer at them from balconies and tossing marshmallows on their cars. Some of the culprits even stole American flags and urinated on them.

Veteran Nicholas Connole tells

in Jacksonville that he was spit on.

"They actually spit on me and my service dog as well, and that's just so disrespectful and it hurts. I come and I feel honored and I feel safe and that I belong, but now I feel like I'm defending myself."

Founder of the Warrior Beach Retreat Linda Cope says she's appalled by the behavior, calling those involved  a 'disgrace to our military.'

"I have not stood up and said anything about spring break because we are constantly trying to get the support of the community, but if this is at all indicative of what these college students do, we need to get rid of it," Cope said.

The fraternity is

for a hazing incident last fall. They've now suspended operations and are cooperating with investigators.

University of Florida President Kent Fuchs apologized and called the behavior unacceptable,  promising a full investigation. Emory officials say they are also investigating the accusations but so far there's no evidence to implicate their students.
