Jail for father whose gun was used in Osceola shootings

An Osceola County father who bought a rifle that investigators said his son used in a string of shootings was sentenced Thursday morning.

Lothar Schafer was facing a possible five years in prison when he accepted a plea deal just before his trial was to begin.

On Thursday, a judge sentenced Schafer to four months in jail and two years on probation.

Shafer's son, Konrad Schafer, is accused in shootings that left two people dead and several homes shot up.

Between June and July of last year, there were at least 18 different shootings.

Investigators said Konrad Schafer and three friends used his father's .45 caliber rifle in a crime spree.

Lothar Schafer's attorney told Channel 9, for a previous report, that the father didn't know his son would take the rifle they bought together.

The elder Schafer was charged with culpable negligence and allowing a minor to possess a firearm. He agreed to plead no contest to the second charge and prosecutors agreed to drop the first.
