Families evicted from troubled Orange County apartment complex

Orange County is shutting down a troubled apartment complex where three people have been killed in a matter of months.

Thirty-three families were evicted from the buildings on the property, which was deemed so unsafe that the county sent a fire truck in case anyone got hurt leaving the apartments.

"I've got to move out," said resident Mike Hernandez. "I don't want the roof to fall on me."

Code enforcement walked up and down the hallways handing out fliers, letting people know they have to move because the second and third floor is unsafe.

Some of the problems include no lighting in the hallways, but the biggest issue deals with the old, rickety staircases, officials said.

"I hope they get all the problems fixed, because there is a lot of good families here that need a good home," said Hernandez.

The complex is also known for drugs, and prostitution and the problems seem to worsen each year, officials said.

In 2014, there were three murders at the complex. Jennifer Valentin Muniz and Jose Pomales-Santiago were shot and killed in the same week in September.

In the meantime, the property owner is being fined $250 a day. The fine has already hit $25,000 and continues to climb, officials said.
