VIDEO: United passenger gets into heated exchange with staff over carry-on bag

A woman flying from Chicago to New Jersey says she will never use United Airlines again after getting into an argument with a staff member over the size of a carry-on item.

In a heated exchanged caught on cellphone video, Natalia Rutkowski, 27, was traveling with her mother on Monday, February 12, when she was confronted by an airline staff member. She was told her personal item was too large to go on the plane and would have to be checked.

"I had already checked my bag and was helping my mom to check in on the computer when a prompt on the screen said a United staff member had to swipe," Natalia said according to Fox News.

She says at first an old woman told her she couldn’t take the bag on the plane and was ‘extremely rude’ because she wouldn’t allow them to put the bag into the personal item bin to prove that it fit.

That’s when another staff member at the Chicago O’ Hare Airport came over and wanted proof that the bag was the right dimensions. A third person then got involved, who pulled her bag out of the bin and said it did not fit.

“Then a man came over and shoved his badge in my face and took the bag out of the bin and then plopped it back in sideways so it purposely wouldn’t fit,” she claims.

She was the told she would have to pay a $25 checked bag fee. Another airline staff member came over and took their side, saying the bag fit perfectly and allowed the mother and daughter to board the plane.

Natalia says the whole incident left her mother feeling embarrassed.

“I was shaking and I literally felt like I was sweating and agitated,” she said. “My mum was teary. It was just an overwhelming situation. I had never been so disrespected and mistreated and embarrassed.”

United is reviewing the incident.
