State lawmaker calls for Aramis Ayala to be suspended from position

Add State Representative Bob Cortes to the growing list of public officials condemning State Attorney Aramis Ayala for vowing not to pursue the death penalty in any cases her office prosecutes.

Within hours of Ayala’s announcement last week, Governor Rick Scott removed her from a high profile murder case.  Since then, groups and individuals have come out in support of and against Ayala’s controversial decision.

In a letter sent to the governor’s office yesterday, Cortes said he believed Ayala had overstepped her position and accused her of trying to, “rewrite the law.”

“(I am) respectfully asking that you suspend State Attorney Aramis Ayala from her position on the Ninth Judicial Circuit,” Cortes said in the letter.

Cortes wants Scott to remove Ayala from all pending death penalty cases currently being prosecuted by her office.

“It is obvious these cases will not be handled in the manner they should by the current state attorney,” Cortes added.
