Sen. Nelson, local ministry feed Apopka hurricane victims

APOPKA, Fla. — Senator Bill Nelson joined members of the New Destiny Christian Church in offering a lunch and some hurricane relief supplies to residents of the Taylor Apartments on 15th Street.

Several residents told News 96.5 WDBO that they had their power turned on two days ago, and took in friends and relatives who are still waiting for the lights to come back on.

It lifted a lot of spirits.

“It does. This lets us know that people really care. When we need help, people are there for you,” said one woman who also got a grocery bag of food from the ministry.

Apopka Mayor Joe Kilscheimer was also at the event and briefed Sen. Nelson on the recovery status in Orange County’s second-largest municipality.

He said all the roads have been cleared and most residents have their power back, but some lift stations are still having issues. Residents are asked to curb their daily public water use.
