ORLANDO, Fla. - Robert E. Lee Middle School in Orlando is now College Park Middle, after a near unanimous vote last evening by the Orange County School Board.
Notice of the name change was apparent today on the campus marquee.
However, we learned that the signage will be changed later.
District officials told us that the proper signage will be ordered and installed when ready.
There is no date yet for the installation.
Supporters of the change argued that the name and rebel mascot is a symbol of oppression of African-Americans. Opponents says the Confederate general is a part of history.
A school advisory group conducted surveys and recommended the new name.
The change will cost the district about $20,000.
