2 Kissimmee Police officer killed in the line of duty.

Kissimmee, Fla. — Two Kissimmee police officers were killed after being shot Friday evening while checking out a report of a suspicious person.

Kissimmee police chief Jeff O' Dell says Officer Matthew Baxter and Sergeant Sam Howard were shot in a scuffle at about 9:30 p.m. at Palmway and East Cypress streets near East Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway and North Main Street.

Baxter died of his injuries. Howard remained hospitalized in grave condition at Osceola Regional Medical Center until he succumbed to his injuries Saturday.

The suspect, 45 year old Everett Glenn Miller was arrested at about 11:30 pm Friday at Roscoe's Bar & Package at North Main and Tremont Streets.

The Osceola County deputy that arrested Miller found a 9mm pistol and a .22 caliber revolver on him. Miller was charged with one count of first degree and was transported to the Osceola County jail wearing Matthew Baxter's handcuffs.

O' Dell says Miller is a marine veteran who was recently bakeracted by the Osceola County Sheriff's Office.

Police said two other people were being questioned, but no other arrests are anticipated.

Baxter, who was hired by the agency three years ago, was married to another Kissimmee officer. The couple has three small children.

Howard, who was hired 10 years ago, has a daughter.
