Republican wins Florida House District 44 special election

Orange County, Fla. — Republicans will keep the seat of Florida House District 44 following a special election Tuesday.

Former Winter Garden commissioner Bobby Olszewski beat Democrat Eddy Dominguez, 56 percent to 44 percent.

Olszewski, 39, will replace Rep. Eric Eisnaugle, who resigned earlier in the year for a judgeship.

District 44 includes much of southwest Orange County, including parts of Windermere, Winter Garden, Ocoee and the Williamsburg area.

Eddy Dominguez was a late entry, replacing Paul Chandler, who withdrew after it was discovered he had been registered to vote in another state last year.

The district has long been Republican, but in 2016 a majority of voters there supported Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump by about 6,000 votes.
